Serious security operation in Ireland for this visit - round up of political edge of dissident fringe (Eirigri etc) set the tone over weekend, Gardai literally lining the M50 from Red Cow to Blanch this afternoon - a police officer every 100 yds standing on the verge of the motorway. They weren't searching, they were just guarding what amounts to about 20 miles of the main city peripheral motorway - and she doesn't even arrive until tomorrow.
I was in Dubai for Bush day and I would say that the threat assessments here are not far off what they were that day - if they could, the Guards would declare a holiday and close the place down.
Most people i talk to are pissed off at the expense (30 million Euro) but embarrassed that it is necessary. I just tell them to take it out of the 3.2 billion pounds they owe us (UK). :-)
