I know where it is. I have heard horrible things about the place, hence my surprise that a 7* hotel is being built there

Re: off to Kish

Well I'm here... slightly underwhelmed though... thought i was being quixotic and adventurous, but in fact i've been spending money like water and nothing to show for it really...!

The ticket booking process is the most interesting (you can't book your return seat from the UAE; that's done by the cartel of hotels - or rather, people-holding pens - on the island once you get your return visa). For those who have or don't need visas, there is still no process to book a return until you get here. In spite of assurances to the contrary, there are no seats back to DXB tomorrow(!) so I ended up forkingo ut for a brand new single ticket to SHJ. It was either that or travel to DXB on Monday and I'm short on leave days as it is!

Still, all part of life's rich tapestry. Taxi drivers are ultra friendly - most recent chappie is married with a daughter of 4, comes from Tehran and likes Tehran and Kish equally well. When they speak slowly, a lot of words are the same/similar to Hindi/Urdu, not surprising really... numbers up to ten are almost identical!

Everyone does a triple-take when they see my passport, must be a first seeing a brown man travelling on a maroon passport.

Insy, yes indeed most of the rooms are of the dormitory variety, booked according to nationality and gender. In my hotel, one of the tv channels (the onlyone with a clear picture) is a live update of everyone's visa situation. The idea being that once your visa is cleared you can expect your return passage to be booked and check out the next day.

Hey ho - tomorrow plans include the Greek shipwreck, underground city and some ancient remains.
