The EU want the best deal not to trigger a change in government.
It's all terribly complicated that even I lose track of aspects of it. But understanding is that the parliaments of the 27 EU countries need to vote on the deal before it's officially approved by the EU and that is why the EU wanted the preliminary deal agreed to by mid November, as they need a certain window for the individual EU parliaments to vote and pass the deal. 18-19 October was the original deadline for the planned agreement for the deal, and now it's been pushed into mid-November. The idea that the EU and May could agree to a deal in mid-March and have all EU Parliaments and the UK Parliament agree to it by the 29th is probably pushing it a bit.

The EU is not keen on extending the negotiations beyond 29 March because it clashes with the elections to the EU Parliament and that would have to include the UK as well.... awkward!

It's anyone's guess to how this will all pan out.
