She's a lot more cheerful today and not suffering any side effects from the dope. Another 4 days of this then she can come back home!
Glad to hear your news. I really do wish her, and you, a satisfactory outcome.

Be positive.

Certainly the side effects seem much improved from the late 1990's.

Just returned from my 2 shots a fortnight regime and still working without too much of a problem.

Mrs OP's been recommended to start taking the high protein / high calorie body-builder type drinks after she's discharged from hospital this coming week. She's lost around 9Kg in the past 2 months and needs to start putting it back on again.

Any recommendations of what to get and where to buy it in AD please?

There's a decent shop downstairs in the Hamdan Centre, although not sure how it compares price-wise with elsewhere.

There are two basic types of protein powders--those which have little or no carbs (designed for people either trying to reduce fat or preferring to use whole foods for carbs), and those with carbs (designed for people trying to bulk up). I suppose the advantage of the protein powders with carbs is that you can get a bit hit of carbs in something relatively easy to consume, whereas if your wife were to have a non/low-carb powder then she'd have to eat whole foods at the same time to get the carb content. That said, the carbs in protein powders are generally fructose (ie just sugar), which nutritionally isn't that great.

A further consideration is that protein utilisation is enhanced by high-GI carbs (eg sugars), which is what makes the high-carb protein powders effective for weight gain.

Having said all that, perhaps your wife's dietician has already suggested what she should be having.

As ever, good luck

Hmmm...The weight's a bit hit-and-miss due to the awful hospital food but progress is being made, albeit glacially. She's due in for a third chemo session next week. Still tremendously positive!

If the hospital food is so awful, can you not take her in some nice things to eat, or order in?

Fingers crossed for the next stage of chemo x

The menu and schedule is being sorted out as we speak....last time she was in was tricky due to Rammers but we have some very kind friends who've agreed to make a 300km round trip and bring along plenty of lamb biryani/special fried rice/all the other nice takeway food!

The husband has just finished his Chemo so know exactly where you're at. she continues to make great progress and gets some weight back on.

peppeh - grab some protein shakes from GNC, and some multi-vits (none with fancy herbal shit though as you don't want interactions with the chemo). that'll at least help counter the shite hospital food.

I believe that a much healthier option to getting vitamins from tablets (which has come in line for a lot of criticism from the medical fraternity of late) is freshly-juiced fruit and vegetables. There's a lot going for it. Don't want to clog up the thread, so let me know if you want more info.

Hope all goes well.

absolutely agree with you Bahtatboy - but kind of hard to do in a hospital room with small to limited fridge capacity, and presumably limited ability for peppeh to do at home and bring to his wife.

The hospital recommended recommended a drink called Nutrica Fortisip, apparently made for patients who have lost weight as a result of cancer treatment. And of course it tastes YUK!
