My first visit to Tim Horton's Cafe & Bake Shop......

.......... will also be my last.

Where to begin: indifferent, sullen, disinterested staff........... coffee that didn't taste of coffee (or anything else that could remotely be described as pleasant)........ feeling peckish, I bought an 'Egg & Cheese Breakfast Sandwich' (or something like that) which at least created a record of sorts: I have eaten good and bad sandwiches at various times in my life, but I have never until now eaten a sandwich in which the bread and the filling tasted exactly the same.

I'm not joking - true, the bread had a vaguely doughish texture but the filling (a sort of overcooked cheese omelette) tasted the same.

My companion, who was Canadian (the home of Tim Horton's), was torn between not wanting to criticise a Canadian institution and showing disgust at the quality on offer.........

On the positive side: the place was spotlessly clean.

A generous 2/10.

Having read this blog last year we decided that we'd give Tim Horton's a miss:

Alex summed it up nicely, it would appear that the majority of these American/Canadian franchises lose something on their way over the Atlantic. People queued from 5 am for the opening of the first store here. I just don't get it. All very odd.

It's Canada's version of Starbucks, which also vastly over-rated.

Never been to Tim Horton's, and based on this I don't think I ever shall.

Have you tried Jones the Grocer on SZR? I have been a few times for lunch, simply awesome!

Have they sorted out their service? It was so bad the couple of times I went, that I haven't been back since. Most of their groceries are very over-priced too.

My last visit was a couple of months ago middle of lunch time and they were busy, but we had no issues with the service that I can remember. Maybe I'm less stroppy than you though Meow :p

Their groceries are ridiculously expensive, but if you are after specialist stuff they are likely to have it.

I didn't get Tim Hortons, even when I was in Toronto,my friend insisted we went there, lots of fat food, but here it is even worse, very sweet coffee, and bad food

Went to the one on the Walk next to the Hilton.

Had the worst smoothie I have ever had. Was basically crushed ice mixed with some berries and a ton of sugar. Also found the staff there odd. They were bullying one of the other staff, mocking him which I found a bit odd.

Cant say I would rush back anytime soon.

What I don't get is that the Saudi copy cat coffee shops such as Dr Caffe, Java and Coffee Time very similar quality to Starbuck and Costa but half price for a cup of splosh.

Used to live in Paddo in Sydney around the corner from the original Jones The Grocer which is universally known locally as Jones The Robber.

People did that when McD opened its 1st branch, think it was Abu Dhabi, recollection kinda poor.
Just don't get the queing mentality, same for those Apple fanboys/fangirls.

Waaay back in the early 90s, Abu Dhabi airport departurers' lounge on the 2nd floor had the absolute best bloody cold sandwiches I have ever tasted anywhere. It was chicken or turkey.

I asked a Ike in there is I could make y own order and clean up my own plates. He looked confused and asked why..."so I don't have a to sit and wait for 40 minutes for the bill to come and then wait a further 20 minutes for a card machine to appear."

Wasn't impressed by service but food is mega.

Re: My first visit to Tim Horton's Cafe & Bake Shop......

I went to the one that just opened in Abu Dhabi mall and had some breakfast thing that was more like a McDonalds breakfast.

The staff reeked of being new to the country and the business and were not very good but I am willing to forgive that for the first couple of months knowing how it is over here with recruitment, wages etc.

The coffee (I take mine black with no sugar) wasn't too bad considering I paid around 20dhs and the donut I treated myself to was better than average.

If they work on their sandwiches, and train their staff better I may go back. Basically I'll go anywhere that isn't Starbucks - which is the most overrated, overpriced garbage going...Tim Horton's may find a niche as more reasonably priced rubbish ;)

Canada's version of Starbucks is Second Cup. Second Cup however does not use automatic machines but skilled barristas so you get the real beverage. Plus they are nice and cosy.

Tim Horton's is just ... bad.

I just had the misfortune of ordering a flat white and babycino (yes, I am that kind of chick) at Second Cup yesterday. It was undrinkable, bitter and burnt, and the babycino was a full size chocolate milkshake. The only could thing in my coffee's favour was that it was scalding. I didn't drink it.

I tried them a second time and they were worse...mostly the crap staff more than anything else. Seems they don't know what products they have.

Donut was good thought.
