Mistreatment of maids in SA
OK I know it is the DM but it does look as though for once, mistreatment of migrant workers in SA has a wider audience:

Re: Mistreatment of maids in SA
When my sister lived in Jakarta a few years back it was well known among the expat community that many of the maids who went to Saudi were being badly treated.
The sad bit is that the maids are Muslim and think they're going someplace wonderful because Saudi is not only a Muslim country but the home of Islam.
While there's bad employers over the world, Saudi does seem to have a high proportion of the truly awful ones. Perhaps it's tied to the general repression of society? The lack of control is taken out on the most indefensible members - the imported maids.

Another Indonesian maid found dead in a dumpster in Saudi with slashed neck and several cuts to her body.

Sri Lankan maid with nails inside of her is accused by Jordanian authorities as having done it herself. Hum, it could be true or as usual Arab countries will pin the blame on anyone but themselves.

Another SL maid claims Saudi couple drove nails into her body. This story has gotten some publicity.
I hope she didn't do it herself because then the Arab press and public will have a field day using this to discredit the very real occurrences of abuse and torture of maids.
The only reason I am a bit skeptical of this particular maid's story is because she made the report back home in SL with the nails in her, so I wonder how she made it past the metal detectors. On the other hand the lax Emirati security noticing she is a SL housemaid wouldn't bother checking her diligently (what threat is a housemaid going back home) and might have just figured it was jewelry or some other insignificant metal object.

Of course the main problem is a lack of proper education and a moral compass in many Saudis...even other GCC Arabs tend to view the Saudis as bastards hehe.
