Angela Shah is very not subtle about ignoring why the islamic world got left behind.

I know it's Time magazine, so maybe not a good place for that kind of stuff, but how about the restrictions placed on intellectual and political freedom by an empire based on religious faith, where world domination was assumed to be a right and obedience to the ruler was a religious duty? That's a surefire formula for failure.
