that tends to be the general perception of most politicians and people who have never ever experienced it..

Those of us who have tend to have a completely different view.

Forgiven ? I feel cleansed......!

Just about to start Engleby, another Faulks novel, which I've heard good things about

Erm, not my fav.Boss style ,prefer his version of 'War' to this tbh.
Haven't seen him since 2003, Stade France-rained moonsoon style for
the whole show but no-one seemed to notice.

Lest We Forget

IN THE TRENCHES

I snatched two poppies
From the parapet’s ledge,
Two bright red poppies
That winked on the ledge.
Behind my ear
I stuck one through,
One blood red poppy
I gave to you.

The sandbags narrowed
And screwed out our jest,
And tore the poppy
You had on your breast ...
Down - a shell - O! Christ,
I am choked ... safe ... dust blind, I
See trench floor poppies
Strewn. Smashed you lie.

Born Bristol 1890

Poppy is worn with pride. Will have my private minutes silence on the 11th to reflect.

When I worked in the City I always used to walk out to the memorial garden at St Paul's Cathedral at 11.00 on the 11th Nov for the two minute silence and the eulogy.

One year my boss tried to stop me ("We're too busy"), so I told him to go and f-ck himself. He called Personnel Dept to report me for my outrageous behaviour and language............. but there was no reply - Personnel Dept were all outside, waiting for me to join them.

Always an utterly moving moment, made specially so one year when a cabbie came and stood beside me. Afterwards I asked him if he'd lost anyone in the war.

"Oh yeah" he said. "Grandad in the First, dad in the Second.........".

Lest we forget, indeed...........

Re: Lest we forget....

My most ponient remembrance day service was one that i attended on the flightdeck of my ship, on 11th November 1998 in San carlos Bay, Falkland Islands. We were anchored above HMS Antelope, which was sunk, then we sent down our divers to change the ensign on the wreckage.

As my birthday is the 11th, i always requested to read a passage at the service, and when i read out the 'we will remember them', to see the look the men next to me who 16 years previously had been here in much different circumstances, some of them survivors of HMS Sheffield, Coventry and my mate Ray who was on the Antelope when it was hit (although it sank much later), was something i will never forget.

As was attending the remembrance service in 2003 remembering the fallen in Iraqi Freedom..Remembering the lives of people whose demise, so pointless and tragic as non peacetime accidents are, is something i always reflect on.

And to those who glorify conflict, ill easily take a moment to explain what the reality is...

Commander, if there is an end-of-year poll for "Post Of The Year", you have just won my vote.

Never realised a post on a message board could be so moving - well done.
