The cat *does* have a name, officially.
Dogs certainly have names. They respond to it. But cats don't have a personality that allows them to respond to the names we may give them. When I was growing up the cats all had names and were always just called "the cat" whereas dogs were called by names.

Hmmm, this is dangerous.
What I call them has changed over the years. Mummy was mummy till a few years back and I now generally avoid calling her anything but if pressed into a corner I say mother.
Pater is Pater. Has been since I was about 12.
