Lab grown meat... your thoughts?

A whole heap of questions and ethics in play with this...

Today the first "lab grown hamburger" will be cooked and eaten in London.

Would you eat it?
Is lab grown meat essential to feed the world's omnivores?
If you are vegetarian would you eat it?
A big deal for climate change, consumer choice, cost or simply an expensive experiment?

etc etc...

Most expensive burger ?

Looks awful - i dont think u could pay me that amount to eat it !

Give me a slab of steak (with the fat on)

This might make me swing back to vegetarianism, in fact i think a lot of people will swing that way if it becomes difficult to tell the source of meat, real or petrie dish

Makes sense to me. And I'll have mine served by a Standard Pleasure Model waitress (a la Blade Runner), with a beer made from synthetic hops.

All together now: In the year 2525, if man is still alive...

Interestingly several vegetarian and animal societies have indicated the opposite...

Also - interesting is the fact that it was Sergey Brin that financed / backed this research....

I wouldn't eat it; might grow a 2nd dick somewhere...

I very rarely have a hamburger as it is, like 3-4 times a year; so doesn't affect me.

Comparing this prototype to a cut of raised beef now is like comparing a bi-plane to concord.

Just wait a few years and they'll be growing kobe beef for 30% of the cost and no animal needs to die, plus there will be little land, water and energy use.

This is promising technology. Scientists are trying to find ways to allow us to keep our consumer lifestyle as it is but reduce the massive impact we have on the environment and on animals....this is a technology that has to be further exploited until we can grow our favourite cuts of meat perfect every time and don't have to use so much water and land for raising animals.

Fact is the majority of the world eating traditionally raised meat is not sustainable.

I wonder if lab grown pork would be halal or kosher? Hehehe.

To be fair I'm not exactly going to insist on an good old fashion mechanically recovered meat in my budget burger instead of tissue culture prime beef am I?

...When will they do bacon? :D

I agree with Norm.

The genuine article will be for the rich, the genetically modified for the rest of us.

As we have no idea what really goes into the likes of (Ikea) meatballs and faggots etc. I don't know why we're particularly bothered.

I'd rather get meat from a local butchers where I know the food chain involved - that's a bit tricky here though.

Only if you know what you're eating. Do the burger chains use pink slime here?

Both McD and BurgerKing assert that they use only prime, 100% beef. **** knows what's in the middle eastern rip-offs, though.
