Kentucky Derby Murder

The horse that came second in yesterday's Kentucky Derby (Eight Belles) was given a lethal injection on the track after apparently breaking down on the gallop back to the winners enclosure. And they call it the Sport of Kings:mad:

LH is clearly a horse-fancier, don't be too hard on him.

It's too bad for Hillary C - she put money on "the only filly in the race" as a campaign stunt..... Mayhaps after Tuesday she'll be killed off, too....

It didn't 'break down', it actually broke both it's front legs.

Just what is the deal with 'offing' horses when they break a couple of legs?

I can understand that the horse would probably be no good as a racer anymore, but are things really so bad for the horse that the only option is to kill it?

Bones mend right? Is there something about equine R&R after having two legs plastered and set that a horse just wont do? Is restraining the animal to ensure bones heal seen as unkind?

Well,

It turns out that if a horse breaks a 'cannon/canon' bone, it can't be healed - so the most humane thing to do is to put it down.

There's a quiz question there somewhere...
