Jammed cruise control

Remember the reports on local women having to be 'assisted' by the police because the cruise control 'jammed on' and the brakes did not work? Article by Toyota on how it is impossible:

Shuichi Hirata, general manager for the Middle East and Africa of Toyota’s overseas service division, said: “In the Middle East, we read many articles and information from the police about this, however there have been no cases in any other regions. Therefore, Toyota, the distributors and the police checked the vehicles.”

He added: “First of all we examined them physically to see if any problem had happened in the brake system or cruise control system.”

Hirata said they looked closely at the brake pads and discs in particular.

“If the brake is depressed firmly a mark will remain,” he said. “As a result, the driver’s behaviour can be imagined.”

The engineers also checked the onboard computer.

“The ICU records driving conditions, such as the acceleration or braking. We call it the event data recorder,” Hirata said. “We can read all the information and confirm if there is a problem.”

Hirata said both the physical and technical investigations confirmed there were no problems with either the brakes or cruise control on the vehicles.

He added: “Of course, the customer does not believe the result. So any time we investigate we do so together with the police. From the investigation result, we can say the vehicles had no problems.”

Hirata also said the scenario outlined by the drivers – brakes failing and cruise control sticking – was “technically impossible”.

In the event of a cruise control malfunction, the system would shut off, he said, meaning the driver could not use it at all. He added that the brake system is independent of cruise control, so even if one malfunctioned it would not affect the other.

Hirata would not speculate on what did cause the incidents, but said: “Based on the result, there was no mark on the brake pad, so, from a technical point of view, it means the brake pedal wasn’t depressed.”

Toyota says cruise control not to blame for 'runaway' cars in UAE

They also issued some advice on how to stop your car, especially for those conditions where the cruise control 'jams'.

An attempt to counter bad publicity about these dangerous cars with the cruise control that jams. But only in the Emirates and only to female drivers.

I would guess that the cruise control was set and they did not know how to unset it. Despite tapping the breaks disengages it.

Putting the car in neutral and coasting to a stop would do it as well...

Years ago I taught a girlfriend to drive, actually quite successfully I think. The first problem was that she thought putting her foot on the accelerator made the car go and taking her foot off made it stop, well yes, but...
She thought the brake pedal was just to hold the car and stop it rolling when at a traffic light or such.

Go karts work like that. Maybe she was just relaying her experience?

I once had the small allen key bolt in my auto transmission handle wiggle out and the whole thing fall apart in my hands.. I left the tight car park in Drive and hoped I'd not need to use Reverse until I got home to where my tools were to put it back in.

So single minded was I with my mission to get home to my toolkit I neglected the fact I was in Saco's (think Ace Hardware) car park and could have walked in and just bought another set of allen keys.........

so to get out of a 500 dirham fine, call the police, pretend that your cruise control is stuck, and ram into whatever is in your way/ get rammed to a stop by the cops?
