The so called Christian Conservatives and their party the GOP are the biggest proponents of Capital punishment. Just shows how those who wear their religion on their sleeve are hypocrites.

Amazing how so many of them are warmongering, death penalty supporters, yet also claim to be pro-life.

That's a pretty ugly group of countries. Take the US, Japan, Taiwan and Malaysia out of it, and its very, very ugly.

Re: It's the Global Death Penalty Chart.......
Given the bible clearly supports capital punishment in Mosaic law I would say this is one issue Christian Conservatives (who are rarely Christian and rarely Conservative) are not being hypocritical about at all...the only issue a Christian should be worried about is judging people and sentencing them, not what the penalties are.
Am sure there are pro-capital punishment Liberals, Communists, Socialists, Libertarians and Monster Raving Looneys out there as well. Might be better to find another group to blame in the USA for some States (only 32 States have the death penalty and not all who have it have used it in a while) having the death penalty.

Re: It's the Global Death Penalty Chart.......
Is the chart per capita or actual numbers of executions?
I ask because the article states: "In America there were 39 executions—more than the known number of executions in Yemen, Sudan or Somalia" - given those three countries have around 60 million people combined and the USA has a population of 317 million people there's a damn good chance the USA has more executions. Also given the USA is completely transparent about it's executions I fail to see how they can be rightfully compared to third world countries and failed states whose legal systems are at least in part centuries behind.
The USA executes for first degree murder, rape and the like. You won't be executed for extra-marital sex, blasphemy or adultery in the USA, so again no comparison. People in the USA, or rather in each State vote for or against capital punishment based on weather they think it fits the crime not what liberals in densely populated parts of Europe think of them.
Overall a lazy article that isn't clear about what it's trying to say. Numbers of executions isn't as useful as per capita and exactly what people are being executed for...especially when over half the countries on the list are Islamic.

Only just over half the countries on the list are islamic - which of course means, just under half are not.
As you say, the more important point is the reasons for execution. I don't really have a problem with capital punishment - I'd say, we (the west) don't kill enough of our own.

I'm glad that the west is more civilised. There's no evidence that the death penalty acts as a deterrent to serious crime (as one example, US states that don't have the death penalty have consistently lower murder rates than states that do) and sooner or later you're going to execute an innocent person. That last reason alone is why I could never support capital punishment.
