"The article even suggests airlines should split planes into sections with people prone to flatulence sitting closer to toilets."

"Checking in, Sir?"
"Yes"
"Farting or non-farting section, Sir?"

Whilst I whole heartedly agree, wind is certainly more prevalent whilst flying they are usually quite harmless unlike the mustard gas variety often found on land.

slightly more of a concern

Cabin breathing air on all aircraft apart from the Boeing 787 is taken directly from the engines and provided unfiltered to the aircraft. This is known as 'Bleed Air'.
Bleed air is known to become contaminated with engine oils and/or hydraulic fluids...
Contaminated bleed air events have been recognised as occurring since the 1950s.
No aircraft currently flying has any form of detection system fitted to warn when these events occur.
Flight safety is being compromised by contaminated air events.
Crew and passengers have been reporting short and long term health effects as a consequence of exposure to contaminated air.
Contaminated air events are not rare and known to be under reported.

Many years ago, I had the misfortune to fly on a Tupolev TU154. This was in the happier days when you could still smoke on planes, but not on this one - after half an hour the cabin smelt so badly of kerosene that they immediately banned all smoking, and would probably preferred everyone to hold their breath and only take to or three breaths a minute...fortunately, the era of alarming East European airlines is now just a bad memory......

Haven't there been a few cases with pilots dying young and this being blamed for it?

Anyway..back to farting on planes. I guess most senses including smell is somewhat handicapped on planes. I fart like a madman both on and after flights, I really don't like it. But noone can hear or smell them, I hope.

Have you had a hearing and smelling test recently?

The smell that comes out of a plane when they open the cabin doors after landing is apparently pretty rank. Passengers seemingly get used to it and don't notice.

I have excellently trained ears, years of music on volume 11 with good headphones have trained up that muscle. But I've never heard of anyone going for a smell test, how does one book an appointment to check that? I can smell vagrants from a good distance, but on planes, I always find my sense of smell is somewhat diminished, as is taste and hearing.

Yes, I can imagine. Bring back smoking on planes. Cover up all bad smells with one universally bad one rather than a million different ones. Well, air quality was actually better with the old anti smoker filtration units.

It's like using a meeting room after 30 minutes of use by previous incumbents...

no material known to man would have been able to soak in the trails of destruction from the guy near me coming back from singapore last week.

I honestly thought al qaeda had detonated some sort of nerve gas as my throat/nose was on fire!

Nothing will ever be as bad as our trip back from the Maldives and the collection of onwards passengers at Colombo... I thought I was going to puke from the BO

I object more to the ones who throw up, usually after over-indulgence in beverage alcohol.

By boss flew back from JFK to Dubai last year and a guy on next aisle shat himself. He was drinking heavily and never realised until his two mates started to gag and left the seats quickly. I'm sure as the trolly dolly was cleaning up wearing rubber gloves, she was thinking "Emirates never told you about this in the glossy recruitment magazines".
