Islamic New Year
It appears to fall on a Saturday (Oct 25th) so I guess for those of us in the private sector working Sunday to Thursday, it will be business as usual.

Re: Islamic New Year
Muharram is always a cause of friction within shias and sunnis but this year I am afraid it is going to be much much worse, although I hope it isnt.

Is this one of the "Dry nights"? If so I guess they're shut on Friday evening?

Re: Islamic New Year
oh lord where to begin. Books and books have been written on this topic...why?
why do sunnis and shias hate each other. Well not ALL sunnis hate shias and vice versa ofcourse. But if you just type out 'why do sunnis....' in the google search bar, the first autotext that pops up will be the afore mentioned question
Ill start by saying that I am not starting a religious discussion here, just answering a question to the best of my abilities and if anyone feels I am wrong, please point it out. I am not a scholar nor ever try and imitate one.
I guess hard liners in any religion will hate anybody who isnt of their 'lineage'
case in point the iran iraq wars, the syria / IS conflict among many many previous ones.
Muharram is the month special for Shias because the grandson (maternal) of Muhammad, Hussain and his small band of family and followers were slaughtered by the then Caliph Yazid under very tragic circumstances. Both Sunnis and Shias agree on the fact that it was a tragedy. However thats almost where their agreement ends. Where Sunnis observe the two days, the 9th and 10th of Muharram in a sombre, quiet, dry manner (many even fast for those 2 days). Shias take out processions with ritual or actual beatings on their own persons with or without weapons etc, holding night long sessions where the tragedy is told over and over again, inducing mass crying sessions etc. I have been told that within those sessions, sometimes the first of the 3 Imams AbuBakr, Umar and Usman are cursed out by them (effigies burnt etc etc) as they feel that the 4th Imam Ali was the rightful heir to the Caliph Succession and the first 3 sort of took his right away from him. And thats one of the main reasons that Sunnis get angry with the Shias, in my opinion atleast. Because Sunnis revere all 4 Imams (Ali included) and get worked up quite a lot if anyone dishonors any of them. (Small fact here : You will never find a Shia with the 3 above names. Shia parents never name their kids after the first 3).
In my opinion, their processions in which they beat themselves up, also is a point of contention with a lot of Sunnis as they believe self harm or self mutilation is un-islamic (and THATS why almost all moderate followers of Islam call the people who blow themselves up as non-musllim)
Here is an interesting read : Why do Sunni and Shiite Muslims hate each other
Answer 4 is clearly written by a Sunni and is a bit too flowery, but in my honest opinion is closest to why there are tensions within Sunnis and Shias, especially during the month of Muharram
For background information I think this is as good a site as any : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Karbala

Re: Islamic New Year
Not sure how this works:
"Abu Dhabi: The private sector will get a one-day holiday for the Islamic New Year, according to a circular issued on Monday by Saqr Gobash, Minister of Labour.
The public sector, however, will not get a holiday for the Islamic New Year, which might fall on Friday, October 24, or Saturday, October 25."

Re: Islamic New Year
Next year is a bad year: 5 holiday days fall on weekends, resulting in a big drop in week day holidays versus this year (8 instead of 12).
