Default Investing money

Hi everyone, not sure where to post this so apologies if it's in the wrong place.
Just a quick question......where is a good option for investing money? I don't really want to buy a house in the UK at this time.
Just a general idea from you guys and girls please. We have a financial advisor already but just need an idea from others that won't benefit from us investing.
Thanks all x

For what it's worth, if your worried about your financial adviser guiding you to suit his own pocket, I'd suggest you look to change your adviser...

I can recommend Norm_UK, he handles my (very limited) savings and insurance requirements, I can PM you his contact details if you want. I've also met Meow from the board, and she also comes highly recommended.

Thanks but we do trust who we have and only wanted general feel of what people are currently investing in. I would like advice on wills though if anyone can recommend someone who can help.
Thanks in advance

Lawyers are good when it comes to wills.

Man, I'm really rocking the unspecific advice in this thread.

Buy Vanguard Total Stock Market Index fund and/or the Vanguard Total International Stock Index fund and a Vanguard Bond fund - you will beat 99% of the fund managers, beat the index and pay less than 1.5% in commssion in total

Why even experienced fund managers don't beat the market

N.
Thats why you would balance it with a Vanguard Bond fund as well

Also the commission charges are less than 0.5% from memory

In the last 5 years both funds have beaten the index comfortably

Your right your investing horizon does need to be 5+ years

If these index funds are consistently beating the index (after fees??), then they're not index funds. Or else the tracking error is unforgivably high.

Or maybe they are. You can apply heaps of logic and analysis to them, and likely still not get a better return than a child choosing them on the basis of how nice the company's logo is.

My son has just finished studying Economics and Maths, and one of his professors put the students in groups and got them to virtually pick stocks to try to outperform one another. He chose stocks at random, and beat the average performance of the groups.

You only have to look at the wide divergence of opinion among the "experts" to know that its not science.

it's all bullshit, I'm afraid.

Wink Re: Investing money

Low cost Index tracker sounds like a good idea. I invest in shares but a lot of the blue chip bargains are gone on my view.

Here is a quote from The Wall Street Journal this morning on the perils of investing:
[On Goldman investing in a Spanish bank] For Goldman, what started out looking like a lucrative opportunity became a money-loser.
Funny enough not many investors put money in if they think it's a pup from the start.
