Default Interesting statistic

425 British nationals required consular assistance in the UAE in the period 1 April 2009 - 31 March 2010 for the following types of incident: 56 deaths, 31 hospitalisations, and 265 arrests (for a variety of offences). During this period, assistance was also requested about lost or stolen passports (246 cases).

Of the 425 cases referred to the Embassy, the following responses were received:

"It's not my problem" (156 times)
"I can't help you" (123 times)
"You're on your own" (117 times)
"Go away" (29 times)

I wonder how many of those that died without seeing a hospital are included under the 'arrests' number too.

I am sure that you are being unfair on our kind and hard working Diplomatic staff.
Actually, on second thoughts....

It is estimated that one Western expat dies in Dubai each day. That's 365 a year, so how many would be Brits? 56 in the UAE a year doesn't sound high when you look at it that way.

(Figures from a funeral director as I was writing about death and cremations recently.)

Interesting... especially given the low age - i.e. all under 57 or whatever it is.

What do they die of?

Having had a few conversations with insurance companies about death claims, there is a higher than average (compared to home country) number who die in car accidents. Otherwise it is the ever popular cancer, stroke and heart disease.
