Re: Inflation
Back to inflation....
In Abu Dhabi, off the top of my head...
rents now have a 3% tax
Tawtheeq now costs 1000AED at first registration
electric/water went up by about 10% average this year
School fees are up around 6% from last year
Hotel tax at 4% so all purchases in hotels for food and drink are now at 20% tax
also due soon...
We have VAT being implemented in next year or two
In Abu Dhabi Road User congestion charging has been out to tender and may get implemented next year
National press talking about more toll roads at a federal level...

The people (private company) that run the speed cameras in Abu Dhabi are on a revenue share agreement with the government, they put the cameras up for free and share the revenue.
Is that the way to go? I think it could well be, costs the government nothing, and if you don't speed the road is free....

The congestion charging will impact in a big way in AD. Phase 1 will impact everyone on reem, saadiyat and west of al sadda street. Phase 2 the rest of the island. Variable charges depending on time of day.
The federal government announced recently that 34 toll road applications had been receieved from all emirates about new schemes and potentially for trucks in a seperate scheme . If trucks get tolled then these costs will get passed on day to day shopping etc
Big travel costs are coming soon

Iggles is PinkMinnow's alter ego. PinkMinnow's repressed sexuality and abhorrence of the naked male form comes out in Iggle's imagined straight relationship with Oksana, but lived out in reverse reality with Vlad and Boris.

Re: Inflation
Is it just me, or are we really seeing some inflation in the UAE right now?
I don't actually have that many expenses here but what I do spend seems to be going up a lot. I feel this in the supermarkets and some of the restaurants... here is my favourite example:
My salad in the the DIFC was previously 32dh at Taqado, then they started cutting the portions which was annoying as it just wasn't enough. The price then went to 35dh but the portions recovered a bit. Then portions went down again, so the only way to make it enough was to order extra meat (5dh) - bringing the price to 40dh. Now, the portions have dropped a bit, and the extra meat is 10dh. So this crappy salad is now 45dh. And that's before the guacamole (5dh). 32dh to 45dh in about a year. I've totally given up on them now.
But I'm also seeing this in the supermarkets with meat and fish.
Anyone else feel the same?

Re: Inflation
I don't deny it won't happen, but my gut reaction would be a large exodus of expats.
For examples, 30k is deemed a good wage here, nothing special but not poor
Income 30,000
Tax (20%) -6,000
Rent -7,500
Car -2000
Consum -6,500
Bills -1,000
Hooker Allowance -7000
Doesn't leave you anything left So why would you live in a country that works you to the bone, is 50 degrees hot and you are making no saving.

Re: Inflation
Already the case for many people as it is
There will be adjustments, there will be winners and losers. But income tax is definitely on the horizon. We'll see how it fully manifests itself. I agree that 10-20% income tax would be the killer for many families but singles will probably adjust and cope.
