For inexpensive I'd say Thailand, Bali, Kuala Lampour or Boracay in the Philippines.

Thanks all, it looks like Thailand is the go. Bangkok for a few days, hire a 4WD and then just go wherever our mood takes us for a few weeks. Probably head north of Bangkok and stay at a Rain Forest Retreat that looks really nice for a few days.

if you do head north, it's worth going to the golden triangle, you are on the border of laos, vietnam, thailand and burma...you can take a boat ride on the mekong river and go into burma/laos from there should you wish, and it's near the hill tribes etc...
