Indian Gang Rape and Death Penalty

Re: Indian Gang Rape and Death Penalty
I think the thrust of this thread may have been lost when rape / murder started getting talked about in the same context as a parking ticket.

All the people talking about killing or torturing someone - its amazing how difficult it is when you look into their eyes, the pleading, the blood, the crying etc, and then also how your body starts to react - your breathing, your heart slowing down, feeling the pressure within your ears, your vision narrowing...

A bit like public speaking, or swinging.

Re: Indian Gang Rape and Death Penalty
I remember a comment by my dad when I was about twelve. There had been a cruel crime somewhere and the Police had a suspect in jail. My dad said to me, just in passing, "Let's hope they've got the right fellow". That's the problem, isn't it, whenever law-enforcers have a reputation for not telling the truth. These Indian policemen have SOME men in jail, but are they the right men? Do Indian policemen ever "fit up" whoever is to hand?
Even if they do have the right men - and we must fervently hope they do - we all should keep the case in perspective. Relatively few mutilators of women are brought to justice at all, anywhere in the world. In a blog-post called "The war against women", I wondered whether NATO drone-strikes that mutilated women and children were better or worse than everyday street mutilations. On balance, I thought they were worse. Was I right, or wrong?

Now the first time you kill somebody, that's the hardest. I don't give a shit if you're ****in' Wyatt Earp or Jack the Ripper. Remember that guy in Texas? The guy up in that ****in' tower that killed all them people? I'll bet you green money that first little black dot he took a bead on, that was the bitch of the bunch. First one is tough, no ****in' foolin'. The second one... the second one ain't no ****in' Mardis Gras either, but it's better than the first one 'cause you still feel the same thing, y'know... except it's more diluted, y'know it's... it's better. I threw up on the first one, you believe that? Then the third one... the third one is easy, you level right off. It's no problem. Now... shit... now I do it just to watch their ****in' expression change.

In the US. In India one should calculate the risks of being wrongly executed under 'cost of living in India' line. Still, the fact that people can get punished by mistake does not mean punishment should be out of question.
