I've just bought a load of beer, what's the point if I can't get slaughtered?

This morning there was a guy in a pickup driving down my street with about 10 sheep in the back, stopping in front of each villa and hitting the horn as many times as he could manage. Saw one (I think Indian) guy buy a sheep, throw it over his shoulder and carry it inside.

That's one way of buying sheep. That way your kids can play with it for a few days before eating it.

Of course getting it to the slaughterhouse is your problem..

If you do the deed at home, you can be 'asleep' while all the icky stuff takes place.

But if you do it at the slaughterhouse, you have to be a witness to the mess.

A friend of mine sent me an sms this morning saying she woke up and went on the balcony to drink her coffee in the morning air...

...only to be greeted by a goat's carcass hanging from the opposite balcony!

I've killed and prepared my own food before but it wasn't in the middle of a city and definately not on a balcony in a residential complex.

From what I see of farm life here they're better off dead.

Most meat (and other food!) in the UAE comes from live export - completely inhumane. I eat mostly pork here because I know it was raised and killed somewhere else and didn't endure a flight or ship journey in horrific conditions so it could be killed in a manner that satisfies some religious requirement. I've only seen a few farms (not what we'd call a farm mind) and wasn't impressed.

This country cannot feed itself and there would be starvation within a month if the ships and planes stopped.
