Iconic Dubai
what scenes/images/ visual impressions makes Dubai instantly recognizable or reminds you of here?

Burj al Arab
Burj Khalifa
Camel racing
Shisha
Overloaded tatty dhows on the creek
Guys in local dress with alcoholic drink in hand, in a bar
Heavily made up women in abayaa
Giggling pinoy girls
Blacked out white landcruisers, driven badly

As I always enter Dubai from Abu Dhabi on the highway at Ghantoot...to me Dubai is
desert - the greenery in the central reservation stops
crappier road lights (the majestic 6 luminaire AD units replaced by 2-ers)
touchier speed cameras
the strawberry jam sandwiches are replaced by gooseberry jam sandwiches
chimney at Jebel Ali
big advertising pillars
metro
colourful taxis (an I-spy game we play with kids - red always wins)

The burj al Arab
What my kids called "Sheik on a stick" - the giant pics of Sheik mo mounted on large gold columns. There's one near the border with Abu dhabi another in safa (I think, next to sheik zayed road)

Re: Iconic Dubai
I'd just give 'Sheikh Zayed Road' as an answer....... it's iconic in that it reflects how Dubai has changed, and I'm constantly surprised how they seem to find more room (and more money ) for yet another building....... certainly, first-time visitors comment on it more (in my experience) than anything else.
