I vote for the Dean.

Kept me amused enough on a flight to Egypt I seem to remember.

And another vote for Deano. Loved it, looking forward to part deux.

Not enough misery and death for me, either.

*sticks head up from behind wall*

I couldn't stand it either, but then again, American humour bypasses me everytime

"American humour" - is there such a thing? Especially if it's spelled with a "u"?

Let's just say that the trailer was much funnier than the movie. The best bit involved Mike Tyson but the actual movie scene was different from the trailer. The storyline involving the tiger was also daft. Give me British humour every time.

I don't think you can make generalised sweeping statements about the humour of a particular nationality.......... there's good and bad everywhere, and much of it is down to personal taste.

The sharpest writing I've ever come across on a 'gags-per-minute' basis was in Frasier (American) but there is a lot of consistently funny stuff in British sitcoms....

.... but not all of them. Last of the Summer Wine was the unfunniest British comedy series of all time, although it was almost matched by the USA's Bill Cosby Show (he and Steve Martin win the joint award as 'Unfunniest Comedy Actors Ever').

British comedy doesn't always wear well with age either........... Dad's Army repeats now remind me of a hammed-up school pantomime, and even Fawlty Towers looks very dated and stagey when viewed now (35 years on).

No comedy does. Are you saying Married with children aged better?

No, but even comedy that was once regarded as a 'classic' sometimes loses its lustre..... whether from the UK or the US.

Interesting debate: if the great comedy series in TV history were being shown now for the first time, which ones would still become classics? I'd vote for MASH...........

Last of the Summer Wine is a damn sight better to watch than most Yankee so-called comedy drivel. It was never meant to be an out-and-out comedy. More like a feel good experience for people who empathise with oldies. Next you'll be telling us that Tropical Thunder was funny. Incidentally, the Americans are great at certain genres, especially crime thrillers. We just watched Humphrey Bogarde and Lauren Bacall in the 1947 classic Dark Passage. Absolutely brilliant and genuinely ageless.

Actually, it was Tropic Thunder. And I did find a couple of bits funny. Not that many, but a couple. Loved Les Grossman.

But again, it's all a matter of taste really. I really liked the film 'In The Loop', but it's not a laugh out loud gag a minute comedy, it reminds of The Office in its cringeworthyness factor and a great poke at politics. Comedy is just so subjective at times.

Why am I not surprised that you liked Last of the Summer Wine? A bunch of miserable, unfunny old blokes who just complained about life ;)

I enjoyed The Hangover. It was daft, but it was just supposed to be a bit of fun.

Comparing US and UK comedy show and films is a pointless exercise. Both brilliant and diabolical offerings from both. I agree with an earlier poster that Frasier is one of the best comedy series ever made, but also think that most of what they produce is spectacularly unfunny, as is much of what passes for comedy in the UK.

And I'd say the yanks also win stand-up comedian victory. Give me a bit of George Carlin or Bill Hicks any day over that Peter Kay or that Ricky Gervais moron. Eddie Izzard had a few good tours..but look where that took him..lol.

Humphrey Bogarde?? Any relation to Dirk Bogart??

Last of the Summer Wine was patronising (to Northerners) unfunny tosh. The funniest ever moment was some old tramp bloke telling some ugly woman in a cafe to 'give us a kiss'. The next time I was unlucky enough to see it (about three years later), the same line was in it.........

US crime drama? Oh yes........... especially CSI New York (the best of the CSIs by far) with the brilliant but ludicrously underrated Gary Sinise and that Greek goddess who is in it with him............

he must be wanker in real life to be looked over so often and so under rated by the casting people.

He gets plenty of work (mainly films, not telly) but I just think he's a much better actor than he's usually given credit for. Even in minor supporting roles he is great value ('Forrest Gump')............

I find all this British Humour is funnier than American honour (or humor!!) rather tiresome.

Comedy is as subjective as it gets. There are plenty of rubbish British and American comedies out there and plenty of gems. There will never be universal consensus on what is funny...plenty of Americans "get" British humour and vice verse - and plenty do not. That's not going to change.

Right on, Norm. Although I was thinking of setting up a thread comparing Arabic comedy TV shows with Japanese ones...

Having seen Japanese television I think that would be a fair comparison...after all many Arabic shows have squealing half naked women being dunked into tanks of eels for entertainment of others don't they?
