Hypothetical Get Out of Dodge Plan....
I have been looking in to the ME job market and trying to get my foot in the door...through all my research I keep reading all the articles old and new of expats bailing as they have lost their job etc, cars being dumped at airports, defaulting on payments and getting chucked in jail for it (propaganda or otherwise) and it got me to thinking "what would I do?"
Reading the forum, there are a few folk who have been caught short within the first 6 months of going out and need to scramble...
So I want to pose a hypothetical question to you:
So everything is going great for a few years...you are in the UAE, have the lifestyle, friends, car, fancy apartment/duplex/condo and maybe even a speed boat moored up in the harbour, nice holidays etc..living just within your income by a few $ per month so you have no real savings to speak of.
You have a few property purchases maybe too....
But you lose your job for whatever reason, say the company folds... and there is no chance of another one in the immediate future...
.....all this happens just as you payments on all of the above start to default as the cheques get paid out a week before you thought they would...the police are coming after you...so maybe the Airport is not the best bet.
What do you do to get out of dodge, back to your home country and safety, and fast....?
One caveat - You can't get bailed out by friends (home or in UAE) to make your payments for that month.

if you've been such a twat to extend yourself to that level then yes, get out of the country as fast as you can. also have a little sit down with yourself and ask yourself "why was I such a twat?"

sorry - but in light of all the examples you yourself quote, why the hell would you put yourself in such a precarious situation...?

It is just as applicable to someone who has moved there for only 3 or 4 months, on a modest salary, has a car that they needed to get to work, maybe didn't realise they didn't have to pay 1year up front for rent but did anyway, has forked out a fortune on furniture and new clothes in the new climate and found themselves in hot water through no fault of their own other than perhaps naivety.
So let's call it an end of the world situation of whatever magnitude seems appropriate to you, but you have to get out, what do you do?

I did say it was hypothetical

I've heard more hard up stories from fair weather fickle expats than i care to mention.
One things for sure fella , the Gulfs no place for Champagne playboys on lemonade money.
People just don't get the basic economics and social make up of Dubai , make your money and then get out , there's far better places in the world to be mooring your boat up i can tell you .
When it goes tits up here getting out can be hard as getting shit off a blanket with a toothbrush.....!

What is your interest in this? Curious question to ask unless you are yet another muck scraping journo!
However, when I leave, hopefully not for a few years yet but who knows, it will be debt free having fulfilled the function I was brought in for. Business will be in a better state of affairs and people will remember be for my contribution.
I know it doesn't fit with the normal dog-fest but but I'm happy with what I have achieved and what I have contributed...even to this forum!
Now, where is the thread about beer and breasts?

Re: Hypothetical Get Out of Dodge Plan....
Okay, don't know why I bothered trying to think of a new topic to chat about as the posts on here seem to constantly rotate around "what tv is there to watch in xxx", "where do I get booze", "how do I rent a car", "where is a nice place to stay in xxxxx" "driving is sh.t here" etc etc
All it was, was a simple, mucking around, what if, shooting the breeze kind of question - didn't want to get anyone's backs up. Bit like in the pub when you have talked about football, TV, football, the economy, cricket, work, rugby, football, you kind of start making up stuff to talk about.
I am not a journalist, but then again - I guess you have no way to know that for sure aside from checking my other what, 3 posts?. Didn't even think journos would give a balls about idle chatter on websites.
I have no personal investment in it either - I am not even over there yet. But my motivations are my own business as it is yours.
Didn't realise everyone was so easily riled on this forum..

OK, so you're not even over here yet ...
Perhaps if, as and when you do get here you'll realise why people ask such questions as:
"what tv is there to watch in xxx", "where do I get booze", "how do I rent a car", "where is a nice place to stay in xxxxx" "driving is sh.t here" etc etc
And if you don't think that journalists snoop around sites such as this you're really naive.

Why indeed would anyone come here and not have at least one or two months of money offshore somewhere safe which they can fall back on? To say nothing of medium and long term savings...
Still some people just know best don't they and won't listen to anything close to reason?

Oh, and I've seen "articles" quoting forum postings word for word. Quite funny. Journalism here rocks.

You'd be surprised how many people do this. And I mean people who take home AED50,000 a month not low income earners.
