Put them in a proper school then.

Grammar should do it. Free and the best.

Ah! The sensible, practical and logical solution.

Unfortunately Dean and I are not sensible or practical people.

Rents are more expensive.

Transportation is cheaper (well, no car at the moment!)

London is more high maintenance. In DXB I only worked during the week and socialised on the weekend. But now I work and socialise during the week and weekends are quieter. I have to say I actually like having the quiet weekends. I bought a cookbook and I've been practicing from it.

I would love to have put mine through the grammar school system in nearby Kent.

Didn't work out though.............. which means I had the choice of "Private v East Sussex State Education".

Which isn't a choice at all.

And which is why I haven't retired yet.

That can sometimes be the case, but if you've been in the private sector since nursery age, you won't have had the 'special coaching' needed to address the tick-the-boxes exam known as the 11-Plus................

Isn't the private sector better at tick-the-box exams? That's normally the most common complaint. Education for exam success not education for employment.

I went to a state school and royally failed my 11+ by a nice margin. We never even prepared for it. I'm sure the private kids were doing trial runs months in advance...

Not sure what you mean..........

At the 'prep' school attended by mine, they received a very broadly-based education, which led to the multi-subject "Common Entrance" exam in Year 8, which admits you to your chosen public school.

The last time I looked at an 11-Plus paper, it was all multiple choice, which is the classic form of tick-the-box examination..............

Do they still have the 11 plus exams? I honestly thought that the grammar school system had been abolished by the Socialists. Glad to see they are still going strong. Do they still have the direct grant system?

I went to a Direct Grant school, but it was forced to go private in the late 1980s. Think they've all gone. Mine continues to offer entrance at 11, not 13, though.

11-Plus exams still exist where there are grammars (Bucks, Kent, and one or two isolated other places).
