I think it's unnatural to do well at high school, it wasn't until I went on to work and then back to study later that doing well became important. You need a good dose of the real world first IMO .

Branson and gates, two of the worlds most successful businessmen, branson is severely dyslexic did badly at school, gates dropped out of MIT.
I recall reading a report some time ago that stated that of the worlds top entrepreneurs and business leaders at least half did badly at school/academia whilst their lieutenants tended to be A grade students. (cant remember exact figures or the report, shouldnt be too hard to google).
As a recipe for sucess academic achievement certainly smoothes the path however it is character which ultimately makes the final determination as to sucess

Oh Matta there are loads of people who didn't do well at school who have succeeded, some kids just don't like school, does not mean they are not academic or that they wont do well in the future.

I know loads of success stories, My brother in law, left school at 15 to be an apprentice at a London Football Club, was there a couple of years and they transferred him to another club. Eventually he admitted that maybe he would never be good enough for top professional football. He was heartbroken, it was his dream.

He got a job as an apprentice carpenter, did well, enjoyed it, then went to college on a part time basis to do Architecture.

He is now filthy rich, but hats off. He found something he loves to do in the end.

Most important thing is that they have to find something they enjoy.

I am having the same prob with my teenager now, hates school, hates the prospect of Uni, doesn't know what he wants to do.... in the end you can only guide them, they have to make their own minds up

How old are they pet? Perhaps give them the oppertunity to make a few bad choices (bad choices I've made...how long do you have?)...it usually doesn't hurt as long as you make the right ones in the end :).

Cruel to be nice and all that .

I hated school apart from sports and socialising. I was great at the coursework and creative projects, but so nervous in exams that I never did very well in them. I didn't go to uni because I couldn't bear the thought of spending 3 to 4 years doing something I hated (studying!) and having a huge debt at the end of all that torture. I got a job straight out of high school and now I head up Communications (IR and PR) for a rather large company at the age of 28.

My brother was also terrible at school having moved around a lot as a child (we both went to about 15 different schools as expat kids), but he still got his dream job as fighter pilot which requires in depth knowledge of physics, maths and other sciences.

My parents encouraged us to be confident, independent, and ambitious regardless of our exam results, and I think this was far more valuable to us than straight A's at report card time.
