Default Health Insurance after let go

Hope no one's in this boat. What happens with health insurance when you're visa is cancelled and you're looking for another job? Anyone got the skinny on the cheapest decent short term insurance coverage? I've just registered on that Alfred site so we'll see what that comes up with.

once that visa is cancelled you’re on your own.

You're right there, just been told an active visa is needed to get insurance.

you can get AXA PPP insurance out of the UK. It’s not cheap and excludes pre-existing.

On the plus side, the call centre and the decision making process isn’t the usual cluster that you enjoy with the local GCC regional offshoots,,

I used World Nomads as a stop-gap. Holiday insurance but you can sign up for it when you are at your destination, unlike most.

Thanks for the recommendations, will check them out. We've used worldwideinsure before for car insurance on holiday, might look at that too. Seven Corners is another one. None of them cover COVID of course, but it's just piece of mind for the interim. BUPA's prices were crazy.

Expat / international health insurance is expensive, but fits your situation. It's worth speaking to some health insurance brokers and asking if they offer short-term policies.

If you go with an expat travel insurance company such as World Nomads or Seven Corners, explain your situation and get it in writing that you're covered, lest they decide otherwise if you claim. And check the reviews, looking closer at the claims experience rather than arranging the policy, as some insurance companies make it easy to pay the premium and difficult to claim.

I'm in a similar boat, as my visa will be cancelled shortly. Our insurer (DAMAN) offers personal extensions--for a fee.
Another thing to consider is government hospitals will treat you for acute emergencies for free, whoever you are and irrespective of status (though I would double-check this is currently the case, as times change). This does not cover long-term/underlying health issues, so it is a last resort option, and one I would personally not wish to use. Nevertheless, acquaintances have used government hospitals without charge for emergencies such as a broken ankle, lacerations, and toothache.
