Re: Happy National Day
im not a national, never will be, never want to be, so really this is not a day i even consider a celebration.
apart from laughing at all the braindead nuggets driving down the corniche with young Ibrahim and Noor hanging out of the sunroof waiting to be chopped in half when dad (or 12 year old big brother, depends on who is driving) has to slam on his brakes.
woohoo...38 years..another 100 to go before the word civilised can be used commonly.
have a lovely day being a visitor here

Why do they need the BIGGEST firework display and BIGGEST greeting card etc - there doesn't seem to be too much to celebrate in UAE this year - all the F1 stuff will have plunged them into more debt.

A little girl was killed last year in Abu Dhabi - she fell from the roof of a 4x4 on National day.

Wasn't suggesting they cancel National Day but let's hope there aren't any more fatalities. The decorated cars are a real danger as they cannot see to drive so driving is worse than usual.

Re: Happy National Day
Did anyone read about the guy in Jeddah who agreed to drive his 14yo son into the floods to view the devastation last week? After he put the boy on the roof of the car to see better, the lad was swept away in the torrent and drowned. The Saudi press described it as Allah snatching the boy from the arms of his father. Are they all mental over here?

Apart from the dangerous driving, I like the whole National Day thing...I think it's quite cool that young people show their love for their country and their rulers...

well, they made the transcision from being a 3rd world country with no roads, just camels in a few decades...maybe you cannot expect them to have the same attitude towards safety as we have in 'the West', having slowly been eased into the whole issue...cause I really don't think that parents here have a 'I don't care if my child lives or dies' attitude. Maybe it takes time to develop some sort of common sense that we think is normal but has actually taken a lot of time to become part of the way we operate.
