Happy 60th Birthday to a legend...........
My boyhood idol, Malcolm Macdonald, is 60 today.
We only had him for 2 seasons but what a player, and what excitement he generated (49 League goals in 88 matches, never missing a match through injury, suspension, etc).
Seriously quick, thunderous left foot, etc etc............. good times........

Yea but they all went on to bigger and better things - he and Mick Harford are still revered in the town.
Macdonald should have won more caps than he did (16, I think) but Don Revie preferred the likes of Mick Jones, Allan Clarke and David Johnson, none of whom could hit a cow's arse with a banjo.

These days he appears on a radio football phone in in the North East (The Three Legends) and comes across as a bit of a prick, to be honest.

I remember a programme in the 70's, I think it was called 'Sporting Superstars' (or something like) and it gathered sporting stars from different sports.
They then did different challenges, ranging from swimming to tennis to sprinting.
Malcolm Macdonald won the sprint by a country mile.

He was always a bit opinionated LJ, to be honest - usually had something controversial to say..........
But what a striker - perhaps one of the very few from the 1970s who would have made it today.

He ran the 100m in 10.90s or something, wearing plimsolls (remember them?).

He's one the '3 legends' program back home, him, eric gates and bernie slaven - the macken and smoggie arent so bad, but mcdonald is a real prick.
I met him a while ago and offered him a beer, he's an alcoholic and didn't take to it too kindly.
Canny player mind.
