Default Happy 25th Birthday to...........

........ The Simpsons. 19 April 1987 - they appeared as a cartoon short on The Tracey Ullman Show in the US, then got their own series, etc etc.........

I still love it, despite widespread criticisms that it's become too 'slapstick' in recent years, and I'm always astonished how a cartoon has become part of modern entertainment folklore. Without The Simpsons, there would surely have never been a King Of The Hill, Family Guy, South Park and of course Futurama (made by the same people).

They've evolved though..............

I thought that the Flintstones was similarly a prime time show when it first came out?

And more importantly, what would Millhouse's moniker have been?

Perhaps so - was it a 30-minute show?

What's your point? That The Flintstones, not The Simpsons, was the show that influenced all those that followed? Not sure it ever had the same broad appeal, and it certainly didn't last as long.

you said you were astonished how a cartoon became part of modern entertainment folklore, I was pointing out it had happened before. Not a gigantic step in logic really.

No, sorry - The Flintstones were never as big. A few idiots shouting 'Yabba, Dabba, Doo' after a night in the pub doesn't constitute 'entering folklore'. When a Simpsons episode becomes the subject of a heated debate in Congress, it's a sign of how influential it has become.............
