'The Union', his astonishing collaboration with Leon Russell, shows Elton John back to his absolute best - something I never thought I'd see again.

Gone To Shiloh has an American Civil War theme, and would not have been out of place on the brilliant Tumbleweed Connection forty years ago. Here he's accompanied only by his long-serving percussionist Ray Cooper.......... stunning.

........ and this is the sort of thing that so heavily influenced Elton John, and explains why he wanted to get back in touch with him to record together, and is what led to 'The Union', the finest album I have heard this century.

This is an astonishing video, filmed live at a recording studio in downtown Los Angeles in 1971, and very much of its time...........
