Default Govt May 'Snatch' Milk During Whitehall Cuts

David Cameron has said the Government's vast spending cuts will see the public lose "some things that we genuinely value" amid reports free milk for under-fives could be scrapped.
The Prime Minister said the coalition had a "duty" to cut but said the Whitehall purge would be "socially responsible" in its aim to rein in spending by 40%.

The Treasury axe may fall on the Nursery Milk scheme, which allows children under five to receive a third of a pint of milk each day for free.

Health minister Anne Milton admitted the move - which would echo Margaret Thatcher's removal of free school milk - would be "highly controversial" and affect children in low income families.

Lady Thatcher earned the nickname "Thatcher Thatcher milk snatcher" for ending free school milk for over-sevens in 1971.

Now the Department of Health said there was no evidence the scheme improved health and, at a cost of around £50m a year, was too expensive to run.
