Dubai Bypass Road be re-named the Emirates Road.

So the 311 Emirates Road is now Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and the 611 Dubai Bypass Road is now Emirates Road.

No confusion there then, is it still April 1st?

He did it just to make sure we're all paying attention... (does he not have better things to do than rename roads to curry favour?)

The 311 used to be known as Emirates Road - now it's named after him....... so which road is this? The 611?

Yes, the new Emirates Road is the 611 formerly known as the Dubai Bypass Road or by some as the Outer Ring Road, although I do believe there is another Sharjah Outer Ring Road. The 311 formerly known as the Emirates Road has been renamed the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road for several months, although some radio stations still refer to it as the Old Emirates Road. All very straightforward.

With a little bit of tape to turn the 3 to a 6, the old Emirates Road signs could be used

And a small typing error could find you driving down the 911 road in Dubai...

They'll be known as the New Emirates Rd and Old Emirates Rd.

I think it's a clever idea.

All those trucks driven by the brain dead that leave Jebal Ali and follow signs for the Emirates road will now go on the by-pass road as intended. This frees the (Old) Emirates Road to carry the non-truck traffic. Given the number of new schools and houses along the (Old) Emirates Road - this is a good thing.

And yes, I was in a taxi yesterday morning and refereed to the New and Old Emirates roads and he knew exactly what I meant. It'll be no different to New Airport Road and Old Airport Road in Abu Dhabi.

Was thinking this earlier - image as a infrequent visitor you jump in your hire car and follow the signs to Emirates Road only to end up somewhere completely different.

In three years living near Global Village we've seen Emirates Road replace the race track that was once SZR. Hopefully they'll officially move the trucks off the old Emirates Road.
