But do we even still need religion? What purpose does religion now serve and are the benefits worth the immense costs?

Can we not simply put religion behind us and forever remember it as the greatest persecution and repression of humans that has ever been devised by man? A stark warning from history about human cruelty and stupidity inherant in human nature, never to be repeated again we hope.
