Fishy business

How very bizarre. A pet shop in Ajman is selling fish tattooed with red lipstick and a flag of the UAE. That must be cruel.

Two techniques are used. The first is dyeing (from the 1970s on), which involves using caustic to get rid of the slime off the scales before chemical dyeing...but results in high mortality rates. The second is low-level laser tattooing, which still results in fish mortality during the handling process (causes stress). Unfortunately, there's no definitive research on the subject of fish dyeing/tattooing to tip the scales (no pun intended) in either direction.

Scales are like nails (no nerves) but caustic solution application and dyeing or laser treatment results in some short-term epidermal damage (i.e., tissues below the scales). Main stress is the actual handing of the fish out of water.

Solution...public not to buy 'tattooed fish'.

When I undertook fish marking in the past, I used to use a cold-branding technique, using numbered metallic brands (cooled in liquid nitrogen) on fish that I anaesthetised with MS222 (a commercial fish anaesthetic). The brands lasted for up to six months with no fish mortalities.

It also helps to tell them apart. What's the point in naming them if you can't tell which one is which?

;) Seriously I have never seen it. I have gaps in TV from the 70's as I wasn't living in the UK. All I know is that it is some sort of Western.

I am rather amused at the idea of cowboys swimming around branding fish though.

Well, thats where MacScot comes in.. Coz the branding irons would cool before they could get to the fish........

When you have 100 fish in a pond (or artificial stream as in my case)...you need to identify the same fish at each census (weighing and measuring) so that you can assess the effects of the experimental treatment on the growth of that fish !
