Fire in a building next to the Burj?
Oh dear! I do hope everyone is safe. The high winds and night time wouldn't help either

The Address, looks nasty!

I do hope they cancel the fireworks for a number of obvious reasons but the most obvious one being that all the fire fighting machinery would be focused on The Address and God forbid another fire breaks out due to the fireworks.

There's a live feed on YouTube by News Now of the fire right now and it looks as if the fire has spread from the right to the left as well. There is NO way this fire is under control. Thankfully there were no fatalities but what of the structural integrity of the building?
I hope the people within a 500 meter immediate radius will or have been evacuated
I do hope the fireworks have been cancelled.

I agree about the structural integrity of the building. It looks so badly damaged and the fire is still raging...in fact it looks worse than ever.

Terrorism or stupid person on balcony setting off his own fireworks/discarding cig butt/bbq?
I'm not one for conspiracy theories but The Address? NYE? This smacks me of a deliberate act.
Not that we'll ever find out.

Aye! This was no accident. Too much of a coincidence.
No sprinklers and no fire alarms went off??
Is this true??

Friends who live next door and were in the mall when t kicked off said no sprinklers nor alarms went off. YouTube footage looks like someone's fireworks above the mall went wrong.

definitely a deliberate act.....was just a matter of time before something happened over here.......but even if it some sort of terrorism, it will never be reported as such

So which are the (estimated) 30% of buildings in Dubai that do comply with the regulations introduced in 2013? Anyone have any ideas of how you could get this information?

Re: Fire in a building next to the Burj?
I was thinking the same thing last night but tbh after this fiasco I doubt that this information would be readily available.
I would presume for the sake of argument that Dubai Land Department could be a good place to start asking questions but good luck with that

I was in The Address working and saw it pretty much at the start. I was on the 7th floor and it was flames of about 1 to 2 meters high it looked like about 2 to 3 floors above me and about 20 to 30 meters away.
I casually said to a member of staff - your hotel is on fire. And then everything kicked off fast.
I almost left my kit and laptop as it really looked only semi serious at that point (approx 9:30) and I figured it might be contained and no big deal. In a split second I decided to take my kit - in retrospect that saved me about 100,000 AED in gear as the terrace I was on looks destroyed now.
Long story short - exited via stairs, as from low floor reasonably quick exit. Some panic on stairs but to be expected. I hear from a photographer colleague from the 48th floor the journey down was a lot more fraught. He lost all his kit but thankful all safe. From my experience no alarms or sprinklers were in operation.
At 11:50pm the fire was on the other side near where I was located on the ground - 3 large explosions went off - I think propane gas perhaps - I felt the concussions from them. Then the authorities really kicked in to clear the area.
I highly commend the action I saw from the rescue services - they we were there very fast and in huge numbers and appeared very organised.
I can't say too much but due to who I know was in the hotel, the level of security on the night and the guests at the event I was covering I am 100% sure this was not some "inside" job thing.
It was very strange to be a witness to it all, I was just so thankful there was no casualties.
