Kevin Costner's films are always unpredictable. Perhaps more than any other actor, he has a huge raft of either brilliant or crap movies to his name:

Brilliant:
Field of Dreams
JFK
13 Days
No Way Out

Crap:
Waterworld
3000 Miles to Graceland
The Bodyguard
Robin Hood

(I quite liked Dances with Wolves but I can see why many wouldn't).

And unless I'm mistaken, it (and Spiderman, Batman etc) isn't a franchise.

Oops sorry - isn't that what they call it in film circles?

Yeah, they do (not having a pop at you). "Sequel" is now obviously old hat: must be a "franchise", sounds better

Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong

Why does Mr. Jackson insist on making everything twice as long as it should be? 3 hours for King Kong, come on.

I believe he is going to make 3 films out of the hobbit (zzzzzz), which is a shame because its a good book.

I thought the term franchise was to signify the various rights that are sold off (via a franchise system) for the sales and distribution of the associated merchandise... e.g. the toys, t-shits, cups etc.

By coincidence - having said I had never heard the term - someone on the radio referred to the 'Toy Story franchise' this morning. I assume it means a series of films that aren't actual sequels? Anyway - who cares..........?

I actually thought about calling it a trilogy ans then thought there was probably more than three alien films and i don't like the word quadrilogy.

exactly. They are not related to each other at all (apart from common characters) - and more importantly they probably make more money from the stuff they sell under the franchises than they do the films.

Oh, and Toy Story 3 is a great film. You are not human if your eyes do not fill up in the closing scenes.
