Films you just don't 'get'

So what films make your, everyone-raved-about-it-but-I-just-don't-get-it list?

Mine are;

Pulp Fiction (I've fallen asleep every single time I've tried to watch it)
The Godfather trilogy (again I fall asleep every time i try to watch it)
Napoleon Dynamite (what a waste of time- wish I'd fallen asleep)
Harry Potter (no idea what all the fuss is about)
Star Trek (Im a Star Wars girl)
Gone with the Wind (I always nod off in exactly the same place)
Reservoir Dogs (couldn't even sit through 10 minutes of it zzzzz)

Try going to the cinema when you're NOT TIRED!!!!!

On Reservoir Dogs - I like the film a lot but I get irritated by the non-sequitur (i.e. impossible) outcome of the big shoot-out.............

For those who have seen it (or stayed awake until that bit) - who shot Chris Penn ("Nice Guy Eddie")? There was nobody left alive who could have done it!! :frown:

I'm another one who just doesn't get the Star Trek movies or TV series.

Titanic....what the hell is all the fuss about this movie:confused::confused:

Parts II and III of the Matrix trilogy. Totally pointless films.

I don't think anyone much rates matrix 2&3 though?

Most of the bond movies now I'm not 12 any more.

Wot she said. Plot, balance, suspense, script, characters, actors, surrealism, cinematography all knitted together by the maestro. Almost as good as sex...

Classic, Shame on you
The Godfather trilogy (again I fall asleep every time i try to watch it)
1 and 2 were brilliant, number 3 gets tedious
Napoleon Dynamite (what a waste of time- wish I'd fallen asleep)
Slept like a baby through it. Utter shite, it seems to be on OSN everyday at the minute too
Harry Potter (no idea what all the fuss is about)
Never even watched one as I dont understand fantasy films
Star Trek (Im a Star Wars girl)
Ditto
Gone with the Wind (I always nod off in exactly the same place)
I wouldn't waste my time with that either
Reservoir Dogs (couldn't even sit through 10 minutes of it zzzzz)

Not as good as Pulp Fiction, but a good film non the less

I dont get remakes, why screw with a good film. 99% Of Jim Carrey movies and 12 Monkeys - I always fall asleep during that.

The movie "Gerry" about two guys lost in the desert. I don't know why it received a highish rating, it was so unbelievably boring.

That's so funny, 'cos I've got 3 of the same films on my list of films I just don't get:

Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Harry Potter.

Am also not keen on most Tim Burton films.

I would have agreed with you on Jim Carrey movies.........

............. but I've seen - many many times - The Truman Show. I still find it utterly superb every time, a really compelling human story, and typical of Peter Weir that his directing brings out qualities in actors you didn't even suspect existed. Ditto his directing of Witness (surely Harrison Ford's best ever performance), The Year of Living Dangerously (Mel Gibson's only really good performance IMHO) and Dead Poets Society (Robin Williams, ditto).

The Year of Living Dangerously is in my top 10.

And Linda Hunt who plays Mel Gibson's little helper in YoLD looks just the same now in NCIS:Los Angeles as she did back in 1982, amazing.

The Godfather trilogy (again I fall asleep every time i try to watch it) Love them
Napoleon Dynamite (what a waste of time- wish I'd fallen asleep) Not seen
Harry Potter (no idea what all the fuss is about) Family/Children's films - books are better but mostly well made
Star Trek (Im a Star Wars girl) Neither for me. Too daft. Prefer original series
Gone with the Wind (I always nod off in exactly the same place) Love it - looks amazing for its time
Reservoir Dogs (couldn't even sit through 10 minutes of it zzzzz) Still haven't seen it

Someone mentioned Dumb & Dumber is another thread and I thought that was unbelievable stupid. I also don't like Withnail & I. It just annoys me, although I know many love it.

Yeah, I had a boyfriend who was obsessed with the film Withnail & I. he thought it was the best movie ever. I watched it a couple of years ago for the first time and thought it was rubbish. And I'm quite easy to please, really.

No one said it was a remake? And that should be one of the last movies ever to be remade right after Battlefield Earth.

Sophies Choice and Last Man Standing.

Both films I have started watching about 3 times each, but never got beyond the first half hour.

The Green Mile. Ruined with the ability to breathe in diseases and breathe out locust things. Ruined that film. Don't get why.

Fear and loathing. Started watching it several times (even when drunk). It's mind numbingly shit. I don't get the appeal of it at all

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? What appeal are you talking about? Everyone hates it.

Sophie's Choice - annoying wench
Sleeping Beauty - annoying wench (plus lots of full frontal nudity, clinical and very unsexy)

What a bloody boring film. In fact, an international law should be passed that no film should last more than one hour and 45 minutes, with additional tax breaks and incentives made available if the film is over in one hour and 30 minutes.

I can't stand long films.

Sophie's Choice: couldn't watch past the point where she had to make the choice. Can't remember the quality of the film, and can't erase from my memory that scene, and must be 20+ years since I watched it.

Sleeping Beauty: either do something that's sensual, or porn. It was neither.

The Day of the Jackal

Re: Films you just don't 'get'

so are we now talking films we don't get or has it moved on to films we like?

don't get/can't stand:

the godfather - lots of people love it. i just think it is boring and crap.
titanic - utter shite
evita - i was forced to go watch this in the cinema. left after 10 minutes...
bill & ted blah blah - just thinking about the stupidity gives me a headache
sex in the city - where is the gun?
harry potter - can't get into it..can't read the books either..
butterfly effect - i tried twice to watch this, but no chance..

i mostly agree with the lists being put forward for good films but one film i love and most people seem to hate is Full Metal Jacket. Another one I like which has a bad reputation is Se7en....

the film that has surprised me the most this year as i thought it would be shit, but it was pretty good is Hunger Games..

Both are better in their original format. Book vs film will win 99% of the time...

Best adaptation of Fear And Loathing is the audio version with Harry Dean Stanton. Please download (legally if you will) - it's brilliant... (no one will. shame.)

I wish 10% of the people that watched Hunger Games have watched Battle Royale.... and then work out which was better. Weapons can be supplied.

I've got both Brother and Battle Royale on DVD. Although I enjoyed Hunger Games, it's not something I'd watch again (unlike Battle Royale).
