The number of deaths has come back on the news agenda again, and rightly so. 1200 deaths and counting. Shocking.

Still, the arbitrations may still be running when I'm due to be free in 4 years, so its not all bad news...

I doubt Qatar will lose the WC, the US will give them an offer they can't refuse. Expect American companies to have free access to Qatar's consumer market, free advertising during the WC, and their football team to do surprisingly well.

What are the similarities between Sepp Pratter & Bernie Ecclestone?
They both run multi million $ sports organizations, apparently almost single handed.
They are / have been associated (either directly or indirectly) with monetary irregularities.
They both have a liking for ladies that are younger than themselves.
They are not very tall.

Any other similarities?

There seem to be two Blatters trying to escape here:

Deaths regarding WC construction are minimal because there's hardly anything underway . The figure of 1200 deaths is nonsense spouted by the press . Stadium construction is underway on some but it's ground breaking stage and some reconfiguring of other stadia.

There maybe 1200 construction related deaths but it's not WC related that's for sure , even then getting that specific info is nigh on impossible here . Most construction related deaths are put down as heart attack / stroke or so on . It's very very difficult to get the right information .

This is what i have been wondering. How did they get the figures and how are they substantiated.

The heart attacks and strokes could be from the harsh working conditions labourers endure?? May just be Qatari PR spin on deaths, kind of like how Saudi locals killing expats has an uncanny ability to be put down to insanity.

I presume they're coming from the likes of Amnesty International and International Union Organizations . They're are an awful lot of deaths here but it's the same across the GCC with attitude . A Hi-Viz and a bit of toe boarding on scaffold doesn't make you safe , it's the top down driven culture that does . A lot of that doesn't exist here , especially with the SME's , it can be non existing .

I'm not a big advocate of Qatar and the way it does it's business but the figures are misleading and wrong . A counter case being the N.D.I.A project which had 30,000 men on it at peak and when finished had one of the best HSE records of any major airport project in the last 30 years across the globe .

It can be done and people made safer but it must be top down and driven through the business and that costs time and money . Qatari's have loads of time and a lot of money but it's not them getting killed so it's not that important .

You aren't the only one. As figures are not published it can only be guesswork surely? We all know of industrial/construction accidents where number of deaths have been hushed up so it sounds plausible but no one can say for sure.

No question that there are too many deaths and that H&S is too weak but it's still supposition as to actual numbers, especially directly related to the WC.

Are we still taking bets as to when it gets pulled?

I hope it gets pulled. I want, for once, the world to just say "Do you know what? **** off. There are principles and standards that won't be compromised."

Doubt it will happen though.

The embassies of the relevant countries have the data.

Thanks.

I guess we don't know if the Qatar deaths are directly WC related, not that it makes any difference to the poor souls and their families.
