I suppose if Deep Purple can headline a Jazz Festival then it isn't stretching things too much further to have, gulp, Jeffrey Archer headline a Festival of Literature???

I said fantasy but meant fiction really, just didn't want to say fiction again.
Read it as:
Possibly true, but fiction is fiction. Not only idiots read fiction.

Re: Festival of WHAT?
Whatever Archer writes (and plagiarises, let's not forget) it is surely not literature which is what this festival purports to be celebrating. Neither is that Giraffes dancing and business book nonsense for that matter. Aiming surely for the lowest common denominator which, alas, would hardly be a first for Dubai...

good point - but surely there is someone who has read a book at some point in their lives making the decisions?

I think they knew exactly what they were getting and consciously went for the big-name celebrities rather than proper authors. It wouldn't surprise me if Jordan is on next year's list.
Meanwhile, I'm also unsure how they reconcile promoting a festival headlined by such a despicable ex-criminal (destroying other peoples' careers by lying under oath about paying off a prosititute, remember?) with the various sanctimonious public pronouncements about the need to respect Dubai's cultural sensitivities.

Re: Festival of WHAT?
On the Deep Purple thing............ they are most famous for their appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival (immortalised in 'Smoke On The Water') so nothing unusual there........
