Faulty Basil
As a former Sydneysider I'm addicted to Thai cuisine. Have noticed in the big supermarkets that while massive bunches of coriander/mint etc are available in abundance at the herb stall, the only basil you can get hold of is the 'living' stuff in those crappy little pots.
My experience of these pots is that (a) there's nowhere near enough basil in them, and (b) once you snip a few leaves off the rest of the plant just throws in the towel and dies in sympathy. The basil itself is fairly poor quality as well - not very aromatic.
So anyone know where I can get a good bunch of proper basil for my home-made green curries?

Re: Faulty Basil
Thanks Shiv - I know what Thai 'holy' basil is. But until I find it here then I appear to be stuck with the stuff in the wee pots.

Re: Faulty Basil
you can get dried stuff, not as good but not bad. look for the asian sections in the supermarkets as its also used in indonesian, filipino food. try lulu's etc rather than spinneys.
failing that its a good excuse to go to thailand

Re: Faulty Basil
would a Choithram's do a bit more sub-continenty food?
Anyhow, in my experience, basil takes up huuuge amounts of water to keep the darn thing hanging on to life. It may be worth seeing if you can grow it from seed 9depending how much you really, really want it!).

Re: Faulty Basil
Geant (French hypermarket) at Ibn Battuta sometimes has Thai basil in pots...but infrequently alas !
