He was 86,had a long and (in the main) happy life.
A roof over his head,a family and food in his mouth.
It's just a fact of life and it comes to us all.

true in a way, but still sad as he was the "voice" of rugby. How many kids grew up listening to him, especially us Scots.

I'll certainly miss his voice and enthusiasm, like Murray Walker, even though it's been a while since last heard McLaren commentate.

McLaren does a little shilly shally doun the blindside...

Anyhoo,I don't see what is very, very sad about the inevitable.
Had he been 26 or 56 sure it might be sad that he didn't get a
particularly long life but really, 86 is fair do's don't you think.
The people who are left behind are sad that they have lost
the society of a loved one, a friend or cherished aquaintaince
but don't you think some folks @ 86 are happy to move towards
the light so to speak?

A young mother succumbing to cancer or a young man killed in
the theatre of war or a child robbed of life? yes very sad, tragic but
I think not a nice old guy with a lovely voice and the good fortune
to enjoy a looooooooooong and happy life.

Yes he was an Ambassador of the Game and indeed for Scotland with a lovely
lilting voice.
At the risk of being branded a hard faced bitch & in my defence, I cite the trend to steer away from the very sombre 'In Memorium'services for the dead towards the 'A Celebration of the Life Of'....... services.

I'm with that by all means. Not you being a hard face... but the celebration of life... he did live a long, good life it seems and was well loved by many.

Don`t know about hard faced, certainly hard hearted. Who wants to live to be 86? All of us if we`re 85. Eva sounds like the hard hearted bitch who ruined so many lives in the UK. Not so hard hearted when sonny boy lost his way in the Sahara. That search, by all the UK armed forces, cost the tax payer, not her tax evading friends, 1.2 million dollars.

Regards,
Davie.

Don't you think we are drifting a little off topic here? As for Bill McLaren, I honestly thought he had died years ago. Must be confusing him with the cricket commentator and his kite hawks soaring into the Bombay sky...was Brian Johnston his name? Both were excellent ambassadors for their respective sports.

Bill McLaren and Brian Johnston? Yes it's easy to confuse them...

........ different names, different sports....... I can imagine the difficulty.
