Any suggestions for a (comfortable) family holiday in Asia (excluding Middle East) for a week in 2014?

What time of the year would you be travelling? What do you like - lazing on tropical beach OR touring towns/cities? Or a bit of both? Have you been to Asia before?

No experience of Asia yet. A family resort with activities please in October.

Someone mentioned Langkawi. That might fit the bill. Some "resorts" there. More expensive than other parts of Malaysia but, with a family, probably good. Great quiet tropical beaches and things to do about the island. October might get a bit of rain at times but these things unpredictable.
Nonthaburi can probably advise about best family places in Thailand.
If you don't mind spending a few bob, maybe think about Singapore. Sentosa island? Loads and loads of family things to do in Sing. It's squeeky clean and organized. For kids tons of stuff.

Bali and Indonesia is a bitch of a journey with kids. We tried. Nope not again from ME.
Singapore is a great fun city based holiday.
Koh Samui or Langkawi or Phuket are fun tropical beach style holidays.

This place is pretty cool, we didn't stay there, but visited a few times and went down to the river with the elephants at bath time. The kids loved riding them and washing them and stuff. It's in Thailand in the old capital of Siam, Ayathaya.

Try Krabi or Phangna area. Loads of things to do whether it's beaches or waterfalls, caves, khayaking etc, and more family orientated, better value too.

Some nice temples in the old city though.

Samui and Phuket are overpriced and very touristy, also a lot of prostitution so if you don't know where you're going you might find yourself with a few funny questions from the kids. Bear in mind that in October Samui will be very wet.

I personally found Krabi full of young mostly American teenagers and backpackers. Phangna is good.
