fake...beware...
…I just watched a really interesting channel 4 documentary on global counterfeiting and piracy.
It is really scary stuff…the global fake industry is worth now some US$500bn annually…and it’s not just fake bags and dvds/cds, the growth industry is now prescription medicines – fake breast cancer drugs and viagra, for example, have been found on sale in the uk in legitimate pharmacies. They showed fake condoms which had holes in being sold in africa, and fake malaria tablets - apparently 1 million africans die of malaria every year because of fake medicine… Basically, anything and everything is pirated...car parts, computers, mobiles - China has even manufactured fake eggs because they are cheaper to produce than keeping chickens!! Problem was, they contained chemicals that can cause dementia... China is the top producer of fake goods, but Cambodia is being used increasingly because of even cheaper labour. The conditions for the workers producing this stuff are horrendous – the factories are illegal, and so have no regulation at all. Workers put in 100 hour weeks and children are often employed. In Cambodia, the factories chain the people to the machines, working 20 hour days… The income from this illegal trade, of course, goes to organised crime… I am pretty anti fake goods because of a former job of mine, but I’ve let principals slip over the pirate dvds here. This programme was a good reminder of just what a dirty business this is…so the next time you buy fakes in karama, just remember where they come from…! Off my soap box now... MM, xx |
