Default Expensive Weddings in far flung places........

My little brother gets married this year and decided to get wed in Kefelonia. I have waited and waited for prices to come down and still couldn't get cheaper than £1700 per ticket on the search engines.

I finally managed to get the price down to 2 grand for me and the Mrs by staying in Athens for 2 days before flying to Kefelonia. Including my share of a Villa its cost me £2500 all in all, not a small amount and probably cost people in the UK 1k per couple to go.

This is by far the most expensive wedding I have attended, eclipsing Cameron House for my uncles wedding. Whats the most you have had to spend and whats the limit before you think someone is taking the piss expecting you to pay so much to go

Conspicuous consumption. "Look at us, we are rich". The Saudis do the same.

I am complaining about cost and the fact it is a necessity. They don't complain and spend with gay abandon. Completely different thing.

Expecting family and friends to fork out thousands to attend your wedding seems incredibly selfish to me, unless ALL your friends and family are loaded. If I was working in a normal job in the UK, I doubt I'd spend more than £500 for 'er indoors and me to attend a friend's wedding, especially if they'd been cohabiting for some time and/or already had kids. Have a wedding where you live, then go somewhere exotic for the honeymoon.

Agree with a previous poster, smacks hugely of conspicuous consumption (or consummation).

Selfish was my thought, my father won't go as it will cost him too much. My wedding number 1 was just outside Marbella. 60 quid flights and cheap apartments, if you want to get married in the sun there is cheaper ways to do it.

I wouldn't spend that on anyone else's wedding.

That sounds like a good idea--possibly cheaper for the guests than holding it in UK.

I don't think anyone bests those grand multi million dollar iiIndian weddings. Liz Hurley had a lavious wedding to her Indian ex. Just utterly disgusting considering the ming numbing poverty in India.

I agree with ya BE1976. I find it selfish when a couple says

THE HAPPY COUPLE "hey we are getting married in June we would love you to come"
ME "oh wow of course i can come i wouldnt miss it for the world"
THE HAPPY COUPLE "cool well we are all booking our flights this week"
ME "no probs which destination did you have in mind? Spain,Greece or maybe even cyprus?(trying to figure out how much is in my bank and if i can afford it)
THE HAPPY COUPLE "no silly we love each other to much to go to normal places. We are getting married on the moon"
ME "Get f#*ked"

On not such a nice note my little sister who is a bit of a diva was engaged and due to be married to a bit of a twat. Wedding everything all arranged my dad sweating buckets because they decided on florida! They where pretty volatile and would finish about 3 times a year. Huge sigh of relief from the family when they called it off 4 months before the big day

We have friends getting married in Ireland in June, looked at cost and it's going to cost around £2500 to go for the weekend (flights, accommodation and beer money). They seemed surprised when we said we aren't going.

I find living out here, people expect you to 'just' fly anywhere because you live in Dubai and drive a Ferrari, live in beach villa etc...

Having not been yet I cannot comment. 1st thoughts are is a bloody Greek island there are loads of them, most cheaper...

I went to Cuba once, lovely place but I wouldn't get my family to go there. (Though it would probably be cheaper)

Was your father paying? Do fathers still pay? I certainly wouldn't - help yes, pay no.
