EuroBritain

The European Union is to push for the right to levy direct taxes on Britons and the citizens of other member countries, the EU Budget Commissioner has disclosed.

Why should anybody agree to this? When were the EU's accounts last endorsed by anybody?

For example:

and

Thoughts, anybody?

It's amazing that they still haven't signed off the accounts yet. I remember when I was studying for my accountancy exams this being a typical case study - how people were amazed that they hadn't been signed off for the 8th year then!

I'm very pro-Europe, but the ongoing issues of their accounts is an absolute disgrace.

So are the levels of fraud, the uselessness of OLAF and the two parliaments.

I love the idea of the EU/EEC with member states allowing increases in trade, funding projects in emerging economies and a borderless region for travellers. It’s a brilliant idea but just badly implemented and as mentioned the problems accounting how money is spent is just desperate. There are other problems as well like the archaic and obsolete CAP system. Also little has really been done in regards to defence spending etc.

In spite of all of that however soon Europe Unions borders will soon from the Kola peninsula to the boarders with Syria, Iraq and Iran. Overall good though there is much room for improvement :).

How can an organisation without a proper constitution even think they can do this....

The accountability thing is a disgrace.

As for the institutions, they need a complete makeover! the European Commission swallows money like it is going out of print. Although the European Parliament gives the institution some democratic ligitimacy, it costs a huge amount of money and most MP's have a very thin mandate from their electorate due to low turnout etc.
