Don't know what they're like down your way, but locally, Samsung had the best deal going for them, in the massive screens included 5 glasses and they were a hell of a lot cheaper to replace than the Sony ones, also a lot more comfortable.

Don't know what they're like in the home setting either, but in the shop, I preferred the Samsung one, seemed to be easier on the eyes at wider angles and the glasses fit the little kids better.

There was a third TV, Philips I think it was in the store that wasn't bad, but the glasses weren't very comfy at all, worse if you wear glasses.

Essentials that aren't...

iPad - only use it for holidays / flights I think....but I had to buy one.
iPhone - physically, I survived without it before I had it. Technically.
My car. 7 seats and 80% of my journeys involve just me.

Basically that, but less faff. It's permanently connected to the TV and grabs stuff off your computer to stream it, or via websites.

I went for LG 42'' (A high spec one) which is plenty big enough for the bedroom. The films are stupidly expensive here though QR150+ but you can download them for free if you look about. I downloaded and watched Prometheus, film was quite lame but the 3D made it awesome.

The problem with most the big ones is that the picture quality is quite poor, Unless you spend serious money 15k + . I would rather have a smaller but higher quality picture. I think Samsung are essentially the same as LG too?

I'm actually struggling to find something in my life which I term essential but isn't. The following really are essential to a safe, seamless, efficient life (just which I had one):
iPhone
iPad
4-wheel drive (not a 4x4)
Internet
Collar stiffeners

Not essential, but spend all day folding collar down and feeling like a peasant if you don't remember them one day.

This business of essentials is interesting to me, as twice in my life I have walked away from everything I owned apart from the clothes I was wearing at the time.
Yes, slowly you start accumulating stuff again, most of it irrelevant crap you don't need, but really? Essentials? Nothing.
