Yes they did..... She from Ireland for stealing butter (her illegitimate infant son also got a free boat ride - He came from Liverpool after being done for theft of a sheep. They got their tickets of leave, became land owners, married, popped out a few more kids, then poor old fella fell from horse after a few pints at the local, snapped his neck and died.

It is true, it probably is a film - all the convict stories are pretty similar. One of their descendants (my great uncle) was the inspiration for Jo Harman in Neville Shute's "A Town Like Alice" and one of his fellow POW's and lifelong friend was the inspiration for the character played by Hugh Jackman in "Australia". Heaps of old stories that translate well to film from everywhere really.

According to my late Grandfather, I'm basically a viking. In reality it's definitely not true but I'll tell my kids that (if I ever have any)
