I iwsh i'd had time to staythere longer. Koh Tao is also cheap as its a little more off the beaten track- beautiful beaches and we stayed in a posh villa there which was amazing and worked out at 100 aed a night but was lush with its own private infinity pool. It's chilled out, relaxed and a world away from here- was just what i needed and I'm sure you would love it there.

the 'no hot water' bit puts me off...guess cheap is a relative term, I do want some sort of comfort and the budget would be around 10,000 - 12,000 dhs incl. flights.

well if you get sunburnt like me then the cold water is actually quite nice! they do have posher places there- theres an old boat which has been converted into accomodation which was 1400 baht a night and they had hot water- very posh! honestly- go you'll love it- Its one of the few places I would love to go back to at some point- and its so chilled out- all my tsresses left me as soon as I got there ( spend as little time in bangkok as possible though)

well I didn't go straight there- I flew down to Koh Samui, 1 hr 15 mins- then boat over to koh phangan- 1 hr, then stayed in koh phangan a few nights, then boat over to koh toa which is another hour, form the port it was 10 mins. I did the same journey back so I can't tell you- I think there is a more direct route from Bangkok though.

If you had a choice of living in Dubai or Thailand, assuming same income/career options and leaving aside not wanting to leave friends/family, would you move?

I think we all would - take a Dubai salary to Thailand and you'd live like a king.

but getting to Koh Tao with kids in tow is a 'mare.

Bali's easy - rent a villa. So is Kota Kinabalu (which has advantage of a lot of cool stuff that teenagers would enjoy doing off on their own)

Alternatively, northern Turkey (south is too hot in August) or Croatia are cheap and nice

Ah the memories come flooding back

Benidorm 86, 95, the sight of single mums in the bar. Always at 7pm for the 2 for 1's. Always ripe for the picking with little if any effort needed. Losing a condom up one it got ****ed that hard. Single mums on holiday are hard to beat

Have fun MH
