Default Ebola

Right, away from strife caused by people and their beliefs, here's nature at work (albeit aided and abetted by man):

Nigeria has confirmed its first Ebola death outside Lagos – a doctor in the oil hub of Port Harcourt.

His wife has been put under quarantine, while a further 70 people in the city are under surveillance.

Latest figures show more than 1,550 people have died of Ebola, with at least 3,000 confirmed cases - mostly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Ebola was taken to Nigeria by Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian-American man who travelled to Lagos before dying.

No information given of the route he took to get there...

And this:

A test vaccine against Ebola could be given to healthy volunteers in the UK in September, according to an international health consortium.

The vaccine consists of a single Ebola virus protein which triggers an immune response once it enters the body - but they say this cannot cause anyone who is given it to become infected.

In the first part of the study it will be trialled on 60 healthy volunteers and if shown to be safe and working well it will then be administered to 80 volunteers in The Gambia and Mali.

"and if shown to be safe"

Right, any volunteers?

My colleagues travel to lagos frequently. Unfortunately the bosses havent stopped their travel as it risks mass resignations from our lagos based expats(mainly indians). A few their already resigned and many sent their families home.

Which accords so well with the corporate mantra that "People are our most treasured asset".

Sounds reasonable. The sending families home bit.

COUNTRIES WITH WIDESPREAD AND INTENSE TRANSMISSION

In the past six weeks, cases have continued to increase. Although the numbers of new cases reported in Guinea and Sierra Leone had been relatively stable, last week saw the highest weekly increase yet in all three affected countries. This highlights the urgent need to reinforce control measures and increase capacity for case management.

However there could be some positive news:-

BBC News - Ebola: Experimental drug ZMapp is '100% effective' in animal trials

Time to buy shares in ZMapp....

You're brave. I'm avoiding Africa for a bit - it'll still be there once this outbreak subsides (it does, sadly, once all of those afflicted die). I'm also going to avoid touching anyone until it's gone. I generally don't get too up and personal with strangers so transmission is unlikely, but I'll be a little bit more careful on public transport for a while. How many people do taxi drivers brush hands with every day?

The outbreak in Port Harcourt is worrying. In Lagos the situation was contained but this idiot Doctor who took it to Port Harcourt could have spread it widely. Will be a lot of worried expats down in the Oil Industry there.
